Classic Restoration

Months,not days

A real restoration is not a paint job with a deadline. It is metal, patience, and a hundred small decisions made in the right order. Here is how a car moves through our shop in Santee.

Six stages

The process

01Stage

Assessment

We look at the car with you and say what it actually needs. Rust, prior repairs, missing trim, what the metal will and will not take. You get a straight answer before anything comes apart.

02Stage

Teardown

Panels, glass, trim and hardware come off and get bagged, tagged and mapped. On a frame-off build the body comes off the frame so nothing is hidden or guessed at.

03Stage

Metalwork

Rot cut out, patch panels fabricated and welded in, damage worked back with hammer and dolly. Metal is straightened before filler ever enters the conversation.

04Stage

Bodywork

Gaps set, surfaces blocked flat, high spots knocked down and low spots filled. This is the slow part, and it is the part you see forever in the reflection.

05Stage

Paint

Sealed, then color laid down — a custom mix or a stock factory match. Cleared, cut and buffed until the highlight runs unbroken down the length of the car.

06Stage

Reassembly

Trim, glass, chrome and hardware back on, aligned and adjusted. The car leaves finished, not almost finished.

Mid-build, on our floor

What the middle looks like

Finished cars are the easy photograph. These are the stages nobody posts — a truck with its front clip on the bench, and a convertible still masked in the booth.

Chevrolet C-Series long bed mid-restoration with the front clip removed at M & J Restorations
Front clip off — core support and radiator exposed before metalwork and paint.
Corvette Sting Ray convertible fresh out of the paint booth with masking still applied
In the booth — fresh paint on the rear deck, masking still in place.

Ways in

Not every car needs everything

Some cars need the whole build. Some need one panel done properly. We will tell you which one you have.

Frame-off builds

The full job. Body off the frame, everything addressed, nothing painted over.

Period-correct refreshes

Bring a car back to how it left the factory — correct color, correct trim, correct details.

Restomods

Classic lines, modern manners. Built around how you actually want to drive it.

Custom & stock paint

Full repaints, stock color matching, or a single panel blended so you cannot find the line.

Metalwork & fabrication

Patch panels, rust repair, and damage worked back in steel rather than buried.

Frame straightening

Frame and axle service and wheel alignment so a finished car tracks straight.

We specialize in the art of classic car restoration. Bring us the car and we will tell you the truth about it.
